We have a “learn by doing” model here at Fern + Roe Folk Tannery.

Zero Guesswork: You tell Mara what you’re working on. She helps you bridge to the next step. And the next.

This includes troubleshooting mistakes + helping your process get more efficient.

Basic Tools Only: We run Fern + Roe with the same tools we had when we were beginner tanners. No automation or machinery here.

When are the calls?

  • November 2-6, 2026

Where are the calls?

  • We meet on Zoom

  • You get immediate access to an online account with the link

What hide tanning methods can we bring?

  • ✅ Oil-tanning, Smoke-tanning (brain-tanning), Alum-tawing, Bark-tanning (veg-tanning), and rawhide

  • 🚫 Syntan, “The Orange Liquid,” Formaldehyde, etc etc: use ingredients directly from the earth

What hides can I tan?

  • ✅ Hides you legally salvaged: through hunting, farming, roadkill, or purchase from a butcher/hunter/friend

  • 🚫No hides from animals raised only for fur. No hides from trophy hunting.

    Note: Fern + Roe specializes in deer, sheep, and goat hides. Mara has tanned many hides but not all! If you have a super “niche” animal (ie one that lives far from the Pacific Northwest) feel free to email to enquire first
