I’m Mara and this is Fern + Roe Folk Tannery.

We tan sheepskin rugs here on Vancouver Island

with natural and safe ingredients.

And we have zero automation in our tannery, except a washing machine :).

When I first learned how to tan fifteen years ago, it seemed incredibly complicated.

No one could tell me exactly how much bark to harvest for bark-tanning, or why smoke tans a hide.

I spent years researching the minutia and science while building my tanning practice.

And I simplified the tanning process so much that each hide of my hides only takes a few hours of active work to complete.

Everything that I do at a production level, you can do at home.

The key to simple at-home hide tanning is this:

‍ ‍1. Learn to use passive techniques to let hides do the work

‍ ‍2. Learn “pause points” so you can stop and start as you need

‍ ‍3. Learn to work hides at the right time, so you spend your time and energy when it counts
