Hide Club

Bark-tanning Program
October 14 to November 13

Hide Club is a detailed, live + recorded, online program

We translate hide tanning to at-home practice - in your kitchen and backyard. You tan hides into leathers + fur rugs with real-time instruction, group guidance, plus an online resource space + a group chat. You learn from home, with an online crew of other tanner-learners who’ve got your back.

The online resource space with videos + written recipes is open for 12 months. Join us live or go at your own pace through the recordings - most people do a mix of both!

This Fall is Hide Club: MINI

Hide Club Online BARK-TANNING Program

October 14 to November 13, 2025
Tuesdays + Thursdays | 4:30pm-6:30pm Pacific Time

About the Bark-tanning Method:

Bark-tanning is one of the three natural hide tanning methods. Named for the most common source of plant tannins (bark), this method mixes tannins with animal hide + transforms that hide into leather. Bark-tanning creates the most durable, water-resistant, and strong tanned hides of any method.

The hide-work involved in Bark-tanning is in three parts:

  • First, making a tea with plants or bark to extract tannins. We call this “bark-liquor.”

  • Next, preparing our hides to receive + absorbs the tannins

  • Then, stewarding our hides as they mix with the bark-liquor; watching them transform to leather before our eyes.

In your Materials Kit, you receive hides salvaged by us at Fern + Roe. We re-route these hides from waste streams and bring them into the hands of tanners like you. Tannins you source yourself, either by self- harvesting or purchase (we have a list of recommended suppliers).

Bark-tanning is the true plant-based, ethical, and sustainable leather. In a world of misleading labels designed for mass consumption + petroleum dependence, Bark-tanning remains the authentic source of practicality and inspiration.
