Alum + Salt
Alum is used as a mordant in natural dyeing and as a tawing agent in hide tanning. It preserves hides, helps secure the hair in fur-on rugs, and acidifies (which has a natural preservative effect). Alum is used in mineral tanning combined with oils and as a base for smoke-tanning and bark-tanning.
This product is equal parts alum (aluminum potassium sulfate) and salt (sodium), totalling 2 pounds.
Directions:
Use the entire contents of bag for a large fur-on hide such as sheep or deer.
Use ½ lb total of alum-salt for making chamois (cloth).
Use 8 cups total of an alum-salt mix for large hides such as bear.
After de-salting or thawing a hide, rub this mixture on the skin side with gloved hands.
Place the hide in 8-10 gallons of water.
Let sit for 5-7 days.
